Tsinghua University Ranks Number One in the QS University Rankings

Christopher Hsu serves is CEO and Managing Partner of the Hong Kong-based Kilometre Capital, a private equity and hedge fund advisory firm. Kilometre and Chris Hsu originated and advised on the $1.8 billion buyout of Spreadtrum Communications by Tsinghua University.

Tsinghua University ranks as the top university in China, with Beijing University behind. At the end of 2013, Tsinghua University ranked first in the QS University Rankings: BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), which ranks the 100 best universities in the BRICs region. The 2013 rankings were put together in conjunction with Interfax, a Russian news agency, and based on a pair of large surveys of academics and employers, as well as data obtained on faculty-to-student ratio and proportion of staff holding a doctorate, among other factors.

Tsinghua University, located in Beijing, dedicates itself to improving the well-being of China and the world through the training of its students. Since its establishment in 1911, the university has grown into a research institute with 14 schools and over 25,000 students.

SpaceX Teams up with JSCAT

Christopher Hsu is the CEO, Founder, and Managing Partner of Kilometre Capital, a private equity and hedge fund advisory firm. Mr. Hsu was a top ranking, two-and-a-half year graduate of Stanford University in Palo Alto. At Stanford, Chris Hsu earned his BS in Management Science Engineering and graduated with a prestigious President’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Strategic assignments by Chris Hsu included an early stage investment in Elon Musk’s SpaceX, the world’s leading private space exploration corporation. SpaceX was founded in 2002 by former PayPal entrepreneur and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk. SpaceX with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars. Achievements by SpaceX, among others, include: the first privately funded, liquid-fueled rocket (Falcon 1) to reach orbit; the first privately funded company to successfully launch, orbit and recover a spacecraft (Dragon); the first private company to send a spacecraft (Dragon) to the International Space Station; and the first private company to send a satellite into geosynchronous orbit.

Recently, SpaceX received a contract with SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation of Japan to launch the JSCAT-14 communications satellite in 2015. Responsible for more than 50 missions, the SKY Perfect is worth nearly $5 billion and will launch into orbit with the Falcon 9 rocket. The JSCAT-14 will replace the JCSAT-2A, which was launched in 2002. Featuring more than 26 C-band and 18 Ku-band transponders, the JSCAT-14 will provide broadband and mobile coverage to Oceania, Russia, and the Pacific Islands.

Regarded as a leader in the Asian hedge fund and private equity asset classes, Chris Hsu has spearheaded numerous of Asia’s leading buyout transactions with an emphasis on US-listed taking-private transactions and cross-border asset deals. Christopher Hsu led large-scale buyouts in the TMT industry including Tsinghua University’s $1.8 billion purchase of Spreadtrum Communications and $900 million purchase of RDA Microelectronics, ultimately leading to the consolidation of the fabless semiconductor industry in China.

Prior to his founding Kilometre, Christopher Hsu was the founder and CEO of Morgan Stanley affiliate Abax Global Capital, a leading Asian private equity and hedge fund. Previously, Mr. Hsu was Managing Director at Citadel Investment Group, where he founded Citadels’ Asian Special Situations and Private Investments businesses in Hong Kong from Citadel Asia’s inception in the region.

These students have also already completed the requirements for the Writing and Rhetoric and Introduction to the Humanities during their first year at the university.
